common psychotherapy questions

Where are our psychotherapy sessions held?

Therapy can either be online (by Zoom, Skype etc.) or in person at my office in central Barcelona.

What are the costs?

Full details are here on the contact page. Payment is made in Euros at the end of the session, or by bank transfer before the start of the session.

What language are sessions in?

English or Spanish.

How many sessions do I need, and how often should I have them?

This depends on the issues you are facing, but clients usually see me once a week.

Is therapy short term or long term?

This is usually mutually agreed at the start of the treatment.

Can I leave at any time?

Yes. Just say you are leaving at your last session in order to bring closure.

Are sessions confidential?

Yes.

Is there any medication involved?

No.

What is the first step?

You can either call me to have a short chat, or send me an email detailing your issues, to see if we are a good fit (contact details here). If we proceed, we arrange a date and time for a first session.

What should I expect in the first meeting?

We will elaborate on our first communication, and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. You can also use this time to see if you feel safe, if you trust me, if I appear competent, if you note empathy, are you counting down the minutes until you can leave etc.

What happens during a therapy session?

Depending on your issues or goals, I may ask you some questions about your past which are relevant to you now, or you may share information about your daily life, or the way you are feeling. I may also work on teaching you how to manage things like anger or anxiety. All of this depends on you. Therapy addresses the cause of distress and the way you act.
You will ultimately get more results from therapy if you actively participate; as this will help you bring what you learn in session back into your life. People that come are usually open to new ideas, and are ready take responsibility for their lives.

Do you issue invoices to companies and educational institutes?

Yes.

Do you have experience in dealing with US insurance companies?

Yes.

What is Psychodynamic Therapy, and for whom is it used?

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on the unconscious processes of a person’s behaviour, and aims to provide self-awareness and understanding of past influences on present behaviour. It is mainly used to treat psychological disorders such as depression, especially in those who are lost in life, or have difficulty forming / remaining in relationships. You can read a bit more about it here:

What about the language during the meetings?

I am fluent in English and Spanish. There are many times I have one Spanish client and the partner is from abroad.

Is the gender of both parties an issue?

No. I have treated same and different gender couples.
